Well, we can use Commons too 
We ask for official documents, which are hard to find for us if we don't speak a certain language.
I was able to find Polish documents easily, with dimensions of all signs, dimensions of letters and many rules of correct placement. But it's hard to find a similar file for some countries if I search in English.
You won't understand the text but just scroll through the whole PDF and you'll see what we're looking for:

Starting from page 168 there is detailed info about all diagrams used on signs and dimensions of signs themselves, which helps a lot when modelling them
