From Milano to Bordeaux it's not quite clear that it would be faster by the A8-A54-A9-A61/62 instead of the alpine tunnels and than A43/A89. The first route is obviously a lot more crowded all along the way, while the latter has more hills to cover but the A89 in particular is pretty much deserted.
If someone lived in either city and wanted to make the trajectory, it would be fun if they could try both routes and compare times.

According to Google Maps the coastal route via A62 takes roughly 1 hour more

You have to remember that there is a big waiting line at both tunnels (mont blanc and frejus) especially for trucks. These routes are also passing right next to Lyon where usually there are a lot of bottling/traffic jam.
