Development progress and current status:

TBD

----------

When I told the devs I wanted to start mapmaking, they jokingly said "well, you wanted to do Iceland xD". And so it happened. Since Iceland is an island, it's a good project for someone who just started mapmaking. I'm new with the editor, but after a weekend of playing with some stuff there, it seems I'm picking it up rather quickly.

Planned towns:
  • Reykjavík: City (released)
  • Akureyri: City (released)
  • Reyðarfjörður (previously Fjarðabyggð): City (released)
  • Seyðisfjörður: Ferry point from/to Hirtshals (released)
  • Keflavík International Airport: City (released)
  • Höfn: Tiny town with gas station & 1 farm (released)
  • Vík: Tiny town with gas station & service station (released)
  • Blönduós: Small town with gas station, service station and hotel (released)
  • Ólafsvík (planned)
  • Ísafjörður (planned)
  • Akranes (in development)
Now I know you all have only one question: When is Iceland ready?
The only answer I can give you: I have no idea.

I'll keep you informed of any progress. Any constructive feedback is appreciated. I'm working closely with the other developers.

I'm keeping a Google Maps map for planning, brainstorming, information keeping, etcetera. I'll keep updating this map, but nothing on this map should be considered final. As for my color coding;
  • Red is the main road and the biggest town. It'll make little sense to make Iceland without these. I'll probably include this stuff, one way or another.
  • Black are secondary roads I currently plan to include, and any industries or other facilities. This will likely change, but is my current plan of action.
  • Yellow is anything that could be taken into consideration. I'll leave the options open for these. I may build crossings so it's possible to connect a road later, for example. But it's very well possible these things will never be made.
  • Blue is the (planned) snowline. Anything north of this line will be snowy, anything south will be grassy.

Easy? Well... take in consideration;
  • I have still a lot to learn in the editor
  • It's not easy to find all the information, even Google Maps didn't map huge parts of Iceland.
  • Any Iceland-specific models, such as signs, still need to be made.
  • I need to rely on other people to make these models.
  • I got a fulltime job, girlfriend, cat and dog to spend time on.
  • Currently, there's not even textures for icy roads and icy rocks in game.
  • We're heading towards the exam period followed by holidays (people will be AFK)
  • A few other things...
Don't count on 3 months.

Now I probably don't need all of these signs, but it looks like there's quite a few unique ones in here.

Need to find a few higher quality pictures though, as these are pretty low resolution. :cry:

EDIT: Ooooh, high-quality vector PDF: http://ww2.us.is/sw_documents/381 :D
